Two more cats found mutilated in South Florida

Two mutilated cats were discovered 50 miles apart in South Florida on Wednesday.

As Lauderhill police investigate a cat found in a homeowner's yard, Miami-Dade police are looking into another mutilation in Palmetto Bay.

Capt. Rick Rocco, spokesman for the Lauderhill police, said investigators couldn't immediately tell if the killings were connected or if this was someone else mimicking events in Miami-Dade.

The Lauderhill cat was found shortly before 1:30 p.m. in a yard in the 4700 block of Northwest 13th Street, Rocco said. The homeowner, who didn't own the cat, came home and found the mutilated animal.

''Right now, there are no suspects, no rhyme or reason. Nobody has said they have seen anything,'' Rocco said. ``We don't know how the cat got there or who did it.''

This was the second mutilated cat found in the city, Rocco said. Another animal was found slaughtered last week, just a few blocks away.

The Lauderhill discovery follows growing concerns in South Miami-Dade, where about two dozen cats have been found slaughtered in the Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay areas.

Chris Moyer found the neighborhood cat dead in the front lawn of the house in the 16200 block of Southwest 89th Court.

''Based on the manner in which the cats were killed and the way they were mutilated, all of the incidents are very similar if not the same in nature,'' said Detective Rebeca Perez, a Miami-Dade police spokesman, refering to the incidents in Palmetto and Cutler Bay. That investigation remains open.
